THE 1892 PROVISIONAL OVERPRINTS

The 1892 Provisional Postage Due issue (Scott J4-7, SG D4-7) was, for many years, misunderstood. Specialists now believe that these were used as an experimental test for business reply mail in St. George’s and the surrounding communities. The small-size envelopes typically seen are all addressed to local merchants and attorneys. Many of the unused stamps, and the tête-bêche pairs, are very rare. (See Herendeen, “Postage Due Stamps of the British Empire,” Collectors Club Philatelist (Nos. 4, 5 and 6, 1996) offered as part of Lot 641.
